Contoura® Vision LASIK vs. Standard LASIK: How Topography-Guided Treatment Improves Precision

Contoura® Vision LASIK vs. Standard LASIK: How Topography-Guided Treatment Improves Precision

With its ability to correct common refraction errors like astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness, LASIK is the vision correction system that put laser eye surgery on the map. Contoura® Vision LASIK represents a significant advance in technology that makes LASIK better than ever.

At Advanced Lasik in Midtown East, New York City, and Duarte and Long Beach, California,  ophthalmologist Dr. Randa Garrana specializes in all major types of laser eye surgery including the leading-edge standards like ReLEx® SMILE and Contoura Vision LASIK.

LASIK eye surgery 101

Based on your corrective lens prescription, LASIK makes changes to the shape of your cornea to accomplish what contacts and glasses were doing for you previously. LASIK requires a flap in the outer surface of the cornea which is folded back to permit shaping of the inner corneal tissue.

At the end of the procedure, Dr. Garrana replaces the flap, which then heals. Standard LASIK is effective and time-tested, helping millions of people worldwide get clear vision and reduce their dependence on contacts and glasses.

Contoura Vision LASIK

Contoura Vision focuses on 3D topography mapping of your cornea, permitting greater customization and precision when it comes to your eyesight. It’s the latest in a line of advances in LASIK surgery.

The physical requirements of a Contoura surgery are the same as standard LASIK. The difference is in the precision. At the heart of the process is a detailed mapping procedure that plots 22,000 points in three-dimensional space in each pass.

Typically, four passes are done, meaning that there are 88,000 points of data describing the shape of your corneas in detail, down to the most subtle irregularities. This means a vision correction procedure that’s highly customized based on the shape of each eye, not a general “average.”

Standard LASIK measurements can’t capture these details with precision. As well as the refractive issues of your eyes, Contoura also maps surface irregularities. Most of the focusing power of the eye comes from the cornea, so the more refined the light is after it passes through your cornea, the less work the natural lens of your eye needs to do.

Contoura Vision LASIK vs. standard LASIK

Both Contoura and standard LASIK are solid choices when you’re taking the plunge into vision correction surgery. Contoura simply represents the next generation of LASIK procedures.

Not only does it offer an exponential improvement in accuracy and precision, the thickness of the LASIK flap is thinner with Contoura, since it’s made with a computer-guided femtosecond laser, rather than a mechanical device.
