PRK

Have you considered LASIK or other eye procedures to correct your vision? Are you tired of wearing glasses and contact lenses? Do you wish that you could drive, read, and be physically active without worrying about your vision? If so, then you may have researched LASIK eye surgery in the past. While LASIK is the most popular form of eye surgery today, there is an alternative: PRK eye surgery.

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, was formerly the most common eye surgery for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and other vision difficulties. New York City ophthalmologists, or eye physicians, are still performing this procedure for one chief reason: It is an excellent alternative to LASIK, especially if you cannot undergo LASIK surgery.

A Safe Alternative

As effective as LASIK is on the general population, there are some people who do not qualify for the procedure or have been told that it is unsafe for them. Worse, some people have been told that LASIK will not work to improve their vision. This includes people thin corneas or large pupils. If you have been told that LASIK is not right for you, then consider PRK eye surgery as a safe and effective alternative. If you trust your eyes to an experienced ophthalmologist like Dr. Randa Garrana, you will experience improved vision almost immediately.

About the Procedure

PRK surgery is simple. First, you will receive anesthesia via eye drops in each eye. Then, a speculum will be placed to prevent blinking. Next, you will stare at a target while a safe and effective laser reshapes your cornea by removing excess tissue. Your ophthalmologist will supervise the laser in order to correct your individual cornea. An improved cornea will direct light more effectively toward your retina, improving your vision. After a few minutes, you will receive a temporary contact lens, which will act as a bandage to promote safe and fast healing. Most patients report that the procedure is completely painless, and the recovery process is short, offering slight discomfort at most.

Just because LASIK may not be right for you, that doesn’t mean you can’t have perfect vision. Contact the office of Dr. Randa Garrana to discuss PRK eye surgery, and begin your path to clear and reliable vision, all without LASIK.
